IC Information
Name: Minato Arisato
Canon: Persona 3
Canon Point: Post-game
History: Wiki page
Personality: On the surface, Minato is your average teenage guy, if a bit more on the calm and aloof side than average. The first impression that most people get is either distant, cool, and charming, or sleepy, dazed, and oblivious. Both are accurate. He's a quiet guy who never really says much about himself, and he's also the type of guy whose mind wanders. He's likely to have any number of topics on his mind at any given time, from his purpose in life to where to get lunch.
Although quiet and distant, Minato is very definitely a people person. He's found he's skilled at reading people, and at the same time, he's curious about them. He actively seeks out many different kinds of people and goes out of his way to get to know them. He wants to know all the ins and outs of how people think, what makes people happy, etc. so he's always willing to listen to what other people have to say. He's a kind person, about as selfless as people can get – he's ready and willing to give up everything for humanity as a whole, and would make smaller sacrifices without thinking. It's also worth noting that he does his utmost to fulfill every promise he makes.
Minato is a very intelligent young man and a natural leader. He's also extremely brave, a little bit playful, and quite the charmer to boot. It's hard to anger him, but it isn't impossible – threatening his friends is the fastest way to get on his bad side. He also doesn't like being told making sacrifices or helping someone was the wrong choice, because while he acknowledges that he makes mistakes sometimes, he never regrets making them. Minato understands that more is learned from a mistake than a success, so he's able to live without regrets. For this reason, he doesn't fear death, but is rather able to accept it as right, natural, and inevitable. He loves life and understands death as a natural part of it, which oftentimes lends a very serene calmness to his smiles.
Just because he doesn't regret mistakes, however, does not mean he doesn't brood on them. The more grave the consequences, the more he'll go through what happened in his head, trying to find how he should have handled it for the best outcome. He thinks of it as part of learning from the mistake, but as a natural worrier, it can lead Minato to being more distant than usual. Although he often seems distracted or off in his own world, he can be extremely focused on a task, and doesn't like leaving anything incomplete, sometimes to a fault, such as if he lets his health suffer to finish a job. This can be particularly troublesome because he strongly dislikes being bored or inactive. Sometimes he bites off more than he can chew in terms of things he needs to do and promises he needs to keep, which, when combined with his completionist nature, can mean he runs himself ragged. He could also be called somewhat nosy or overly concerned with others just because he wants to be helpful.
Minato is honest and trustworthy, but not naïve. He knows there are a lot of dangerous and cruel people in the world, and also that some people have memories or problems they just don't want to share. He's respectful of the need for privacy as he enjoys it himself. He can keep a secret, but will reveal it if he feels a strong need to in order to protect someone, or some other drastic matter demands it. He doesn't like it, but the safety of others always comes first, especially the safety of his friends. For most of his life, Minato hasn't had a family, so he gets very attached to his friends, to the point he makes a kind of pseudo-family. He's polite, but the closer he becomes to someone, the more he'll start to joke around and join in less-intellectual shenanigans and good-natured teasing. While capable of functioning normally alone, he much prefers company, and will be far more relaxed in general if he has friends with him. He's prone to stress, and spending time with his friends and partners is how he relieves it. His energy is channeled more constructively than destructively, for all he enjoys sparring and is skilled at fighting. For example, he would much prefer sparring and training with Akihiko to slaughtering Shadows in Tartarus. Without other outlets, he'll often retreat into his mp3 player and wall himself off a bit with music. This, of course, increases his image as a distant loner, and contributes to his constant desire to find something to do with his time. His friends, as his primary source of stress relief, are the most important thing to him. That said, he's very adaptable, able to adjust to new things and situations with ease, which is part of what makes him a good leader.
There are a great many things he loves, so he will burn his dread to defend the world to the last.

Minato hadn't been surprised when Ryoji came to the dorm, asking for their decision. He said he'd do it, after all. Nevertheless, it felt surreal. Ryoji wasn't human, but a Shadow, the herald of the death of all things. He'd been sealed inside Minato for ten years as Pharos. And both Pharos and Ryoji were Minato's friends – as important to him as any member of SEES. In some ways, that made the black-haired boy the closest thing Minato had to family. A brother, of sorts – especially so because he'd been sealed inside Minato on the night of his parents' deaths, almost at the same moment. He'd spent much of the last month thinking on that, trying to figure out how exactly he felt about it. In the end, Minato decided it didn't matter.
Ryoji was his friend. He refused to kill him. Everyone in SEES agreed – they wanted to fight. Even if it was hopeless, pointless, impossible, everyone wanted to at least try to stop the end of the world, and no one wanted to kill Ryoji. But now here they were, sitting in Minato's room, just the two of them. Ryoji said that some part of him was human because he'd been sealed in Minato for so long, and so Minato was the only one who could kill him... The human part that came from Minato was asking for death. Begging for it.
Minato had to admit, his reasons made sense. Everyone in SEES was suffering at some level. He could see it in their eyes, in the way they spoke and moved during the Dark Hour, no matter how well they hid it. This life, and the gravity of their responsibilities as Persona-users, was wearing on everyone. This past month, too, he'd noticed traces of guilt in everyone, including himself. They defeated the twelve Shadows. They were the ones who made destruction imminent, even as they tried to protect people. This was their fault. Ryoji was asking for death so the friends he'd made wouldn't have to keep suffering.
It was tempting. Sometimes, Minato couldn't stand looking at the others, watching the responsibility and guilt hanging over them. He hated seeing them suffer, every moment of it. They were...they were everything to him. They would forget everything about Shadows and the Dark Hour if Minato killed Ryoji. They would never know he'd gone against what they all agreed. They wouldn't blame him or accuse him... They could be happy. They'd be able to live normally. That was what they wanted, wasn't it? To be free of the Dark Hour and live like normal kids? And if Minato could give them that, then...
...He couldn't do it. There Ryoji was, begging for death, giving Minato the chance to give his friends the happiness they deserved, but Minato shook his head. No. He could never kill one of his friends. Shadow or not, Ryoji was human. On top of that... If everyone lost their memories, did that mean they would stop being friends? For the most part, it was SEES and the need to fight Shadows that had brought everyone together. If they lost that, then Ryoji wasn't the only friend they'd lose. And everyone had promised to fight, to try. Minato couldn't betray them, not like that. He would never forgive himself if he went against the decision everyone had made on their own and lost them all the bonds they had in SEES.
Maybe it would be better to do it. Maybe the right choice was to kill Ryoji and be happy for as long as they had, but to Minato? It wasn't just about sacrificing one for the good of many. It was about killing a brother and losing his family again. It was impossible.
